Member Spotlight: Janet Newman
What prompted you to join Southside Wellness Coalition?
I wanted to help my community. I used to be a drug addict for over 30 years and I have a passion to help others not go down the same roads I have traveled. During that that time I also struggled with suicidal ideations, so I also believe it’s important to get that knowledge out.
What do you consider to be one of Southside’s biggest challenges?
Getting more of the public involved because a lot of the things being taught are looked at as stigmas through a lot of society’s eyes.
What do you consider to be one of Southside’s biggest strengths?
No matter what we keep pushing forward and continue to show up and do everything in our ability to make sure that we have done everything we know how to do to get the knowledge out and educate the public.
If you are not employed outside your home, what other work or activity takes up most of your time?
Helping people find resources for recovery centers, helping them with getting their insurance straight, etc. I usually am the person people call when they don’t know how to do something and I help the figure it out, because I don’t know a lot of times either. I just do everything I can to help others that do know what to do or which way to turn for their next step in life.
What is a fun fact about you that not many people know?
I really love flowers, especially Stargazer lilies, gerbera daisies, roses, and calla lily.
What is something you’ve always wanted to do?
Help others and show them the love of Christ
What is your favorite quote?
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John3:16
