What prompted you to join Southside Wellness Coalition?

I have participated in several of the community trainings and found these to be beneficial. As a result of this I have been on the mailing list for quite some time and was recently asked to join the Leadership Team.

What do you consider to be one of Southside’s biggest challenges?

There are several challenges that my clients face regularly which consistently impact their quality of life. I would say lack of public transportation and inadequate housing are the top two.

What do you consider to be one of Southside’s biggest strengths?

Although it is a rural area, there are a number of resources that do exist such as food pantries and other programs aimed at food insecurity, clothes closets, and housing support. The difficulty seems to be connecting the resources we do have with the people who need to help as they are often the same people who don’t have the resources to access the internet.

If you are employed outside your home, what kind of work do you do?

Behavioral Health Therapist at Sentara Behavioral Health Services since 2018

What is a fun fact about you that not many people know?

I’m a pretty open book so most people who know me at all know that if I like something I’m all in – as such I’m a pretty hard core college football fan. Go Dukes! (And Tigers and Cavaliers)

What is something you’ve always wanted to do?

I enjoy travel and there are a number of places that I have yet to visit – I am always hoping to expand my travel horizons.

What is your favorite quote?

“If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both salt water mixed with air.” -“Meditation,” Nayyirah Waheed
